Graham Souness
I went on the field to play better than the man in front of me

Re Modern football
“Some of the games are sensational. But it’s a 50-50 thing,” explains Souness. “Some games I’ll settle down to watch and I see midfield players passing it square all the time. It does nothing for me and I’ll turn over and watch something else. Other games just grab me and I’m glued to it. Maybe I’ve always been like that.”

Re: Graham Souness
Is this the same GS who didn't rate Rice?

The cunt is a pundit who can't be bothered to watch football he doesn't consider 'riveting'?

'Oi Chim, did you do that work I asked you to do'?

'No guv, to tell you the truth I didn't find it riveting enough so I fucked off and played golf. I'll probably not do it tomorrow either as I'll be watching Liverpool V Man U'.

''That's the spirit mate - you do that and I'll just get Jenny to book your first class flight and five star hotel for the Euros. Don't worry, those saps who pay their SKY subscriptions are paying for your jolly up'.

It certainly explains a lot about GS's punditry.

.. I remember his hard man bollocks until Scotland played a mental Uruguay team in the world cup, then suddenly he was out injured
.

Re: Graham Souness
He spent around 2 seasons endlessly criticising Rice when he played for us and was dominating. He had such little knowledge of how we play and how Rice plays that he was unwatchable as a pundit from that point. Constantly saying he was a natural centre half and will one day have to go back to that position despite the fact that he was dominating the midfield for us week in week out. Luckily i have access to a few overseas channels so don’t have to suffer the awful pundits on Sky & BT these days.

What’s all the fuss?

Souness just says what his target audience expects to hear. And that includes plenty on here.

Re: Graham Souness
Think he struggled in the heat in 86 and Fergie dropped him for the Uruguay game, of which I believe Souness accepted. Remember Frankie Mac being surprised Fergie dropped Souness as well as playing the likes of Sharp and Sturrock ahead of Frank himself.

Re: Graham Souness
met him in the late 80s at west ham and he was played manager at rangers. he was down having a look at a couple of players, in particular julian. he was very polite and friendly, the complete opposite of his on pitch demeanour

Mental that he planted that Galatasaray flag in the pitch after beating Fenerbahce. Could have started a civil war that.

Re: Graham Souness
Just finished a polish on a script about the early life of Craig Johnston, and Souness features as a big favourite of Jack Charlton when he managed Middlesbrough.

After Craig Johnston's trial for Middlesbrough, for which he flew all the way from Australian for, Charlton told him that he was the worst footballer he'd ever seen and told him to fuck off back to Australia.

Instead, he stayed, and Souness helped him out by giving him odd jobs to earn a bit of cash.

It's a great story and should be on Netflix sometime next year.

Re: Graham Souness
I don't mind Souness, was a top player, albeit also a dirty one, and one of the better pundits no doubt, but the fella clearly takes himself very seriously and needs to get over himself a bit, particularly at his age now. I also wonder why he is so prominent in the media all the time, and all after quitting SKY.

Re: Graham Souness
You're right, he was a top player and a dirty one.

I once stood next to him in a check in queue at Heathrow for a Manchester shuttle. He seemed familiar but I didn't recognise him until he went away.

Bit of a dour Scotsman but does talk sense a lot of the time, a more measured Roy Keane?

Cant question his playing performance, was top draw and a real no nonsense defender.

Re: Graham Souness
Yeah but he's not paid to be a top defender, his bread and butter is knowing the world's top league NOW.

would it kill him to watch a team outside the top six?

Re: Graham Souness
In the hierarchy of arrogant football pundits ranks second behind Alan Hansen. Both are sweatys that played for Liverpool. Coincidence? I think not.
